Why Do Varicose Veins Bleed? What Should You Do When It Happens?
Varicose Vein Bleeding? Act Quickly. Seek Medical Care - Dr. Uday Ravi
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear in the legs. In some cases, veins close to the skin's surface can become fragile and bleed, sometimes after a minor injury or even a small scratch. Knowing what to do when bleeding occurs is important.
At Lumina Vein & Vascular Center, we encourage awareness of vein health and the importance of seeking appropriate medical care for bleeding varicose veins.
Why Do Varicose Veins Bleed?
πSeveral factors can increase the risk of bleeding from varicose veins:
π Fragile vein walls: Enlarged veins near the skin's surface may be more vulnerable to injury.

Why Do Varicose Veins Bleed?
πSeveral factors can increase the risk of bleeding from varicose veins:
π Fragile vein walls: Enlarged veins near the skin's surface may be more vulnerable to injury.
πMinor injuries: A scratch, bump, or accidental cut can cause bleeding.
π Skin changes: Dry, thin, or irritated skin around affected veins may be more easily damaged.
πIncreased pressure in the veins: Poor vein-valve function can contribute to elevated pressure in superficial veins.
πAdvanced varicose veins: Prominent veins close to the skin may be at greater risk of bleeding.
Bleeding can sometimes be substantial, so it should never be ignored.
What Should You Do If a Varicose Vein Starts Bleeding?
Follow these first-aid steps:
1. Lie down and raise the affected leg.
If it is safe to do so, lie down and elevate the leg above the level of your heart.
2. Apply firm, continuous pressure.
Place a clean cloth or dressing directly over the bleeding point and press firmly. Maintain pressure without repeatedly lifting the cloth to check.
3. Seek urgent medical care.
Even if the bleeding stops, arrange prompt medical assessment because the underlying vein problem may need treatment.
4. Get emergency help if needed.
If bleeding is heavy, does not stop with firm pressure, or you feel faint or weak, call emergency services. Do not delay getting help.
Important: Do not tie a tourniquet around the leg or rely on home remedies to stop the bleeding.
Can Varicose Vein Bleeding Be Prevented?
πAlthough not every episode can be prevented, the following measures may help protect the skin and support vein health:
π Avoid scratching or rubbing the skin over prominent veins.
πKeep the skin moisturized if it is dry.
π Wear protective clothing when activities may cause leg injuries.
πAvoid prolonged sitting or standing when possible; take regular movement breaks.
π Seek medical advice for prominent varicose veins, skin changes, or previous bleeding episodes.
When Should You Consult a Vein Specialist?
Seek professional evaluation if you have visible varicose veins, recurring leg discomfort, swelling, skin discoloration, or a history of bleeding from a vein. A clinician may recommend an examination and a venous ultrasound to assess blood flow and determine suitable treatment options.
Depending on the assessment, treatment may include compression when appropriate, sclerotherapy, laser-based procedures, or other vein treatments.
Never ignore bleeding from a varicose vein, even if it stops on its own.
